NOTES:Multiplying and Dividing with Decimals - Multiplying and Dividing with Decimals

  • Notes on Multiplying and Dividing with Decimals:

    Multiplying Decimals:

To multiply decimals, first multiply as you would with whole numbers ignoring the decimal points.

Then find the sum(add) how many digits are in decimal places in the problem(factors).

Place the decimal point in the product(answer) making sure there are the same number of digits in the product(answer) as in the problem(factors).  Count in from the right to the left.

    Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers:

Dividing decimals is similar to dividing whole numbers.  When you divide a decimal by a whole number, the placement of the decimal point in the quotient (answer) is determined by the placement of the decimal in the dividend.  All you have to do is move the decimal point in the dividend straight up into the quotient.  Then divide as if they were whole numbers.

Dividing a Decimal by a Decimal:

First change the divisor to a whole number by moving the decimal point to the right of the number.

Next, move the decimal point in the dividend the same number of places to the right that you moved the decimal point in the divisor.

Now you have a decimal being divided by a whole number, so refer to the previous notes.
